Kenya
Big skies, bigger herds.
Kenya still does the classic safari better than anywhere else in the region. The Mara's grass plains hold the migration for months at a time; further east, Amboseli sets its elephant herds against Kilimanjaro's silhouette. It's an easy country to fly into and a hard one to leave.

Scale that's hard to describe.
Tanzania is East Africa at its most vast — the Serengeti plains stretch well past what a single game drive can cover, and the Ngorongoro Crater drops you into a self-contained world of its own. Add Zanzibar's coastline within easy reach, and it's a country built for slower, longer journeys.

Green, and quieter.
Uganda trades open plains for forest and highland — this is where the primate trekking is, and where the crowds mostly aren't. A morning spent with a gorilla family in Bwindi is a different register of safari entirely, unhurried and close.

A thousand hills, close encounters.
Rwanda has built some of the most immaculately run gorilla trekking anywhere, in volcanic highlands that are as striking as the trek itself. It pairs naturally with a short extension into Akagera for a classic game drive, or Nyungwe for chimps and canopy walks.
